Calling all renters! As the fatal building collapse at 324 Main Street demonstrates, landlord neglect is a public health issue with life and death outcomes. Standing alone, it's hard to see a way out. But together we can protect each other.

We are literally sickened by landlords who do nothing to improve living conditions while they make unilateral decisions to raise the rent, prioritize profit, neglect repairs, and ignore safety concerns. When we organize with our neighbors, we can democratically set the agenda for addressing conditions within our buildings. We can organize and coordinate mutual aid to take action. We have more power together!

But what are our rights as tenants? What is community organizing? How do we start?

In this session we'll share tips, tricks, and pitfalls for organizing a tenants’ association. Let’s end the dictatorship of the landlord. Join the Quad Cities Tenant Alliance! Let’s build a safe Quad Cities together. Please visit qctenantalliance.org to learn more!

Keynote Speaker, Deborah Thompson, MPA
Values in the Wild: A reflection of morals and values in policy and politics.

As our day of learning, sharing, moving, and connecting moves into the evening, Deborah H.

Thompson will reflect on the impact that morals and values will have on our efforts to make progress

in Iowa. These days, politics and cultural fights are creating separation and isolation. Whether it’s

surviving awkward family gatherings or the upcoming 2024 presidential election. The “fighting” makes

people feel scared, turned off, and frustrated. Instead of finding connection – we’re creating distance.

There is another way to effectively communicate what matters to you and to exchange ideas with

people who have different opinions or life experiences. It is possible to talk about uncomfortable

topics when you have the confidence that you won’t lose important relationships.

At the end of Deborah’s keynote you will:

Know what values-based communication means and looks like.

Have the tools to “check your elephant” to remain present and engaged in a conversation you

find frustrating.
